North Carolina: H 1614 Prohibits the Private Possession of Dangerous Wild Animals as "Pets"
Bill Description: If passed, this bill will require that counties and municipalities adopt an ordinance that either prohibits or restricts the private possession of large cats, bears, and wolves. Persons possessing one of these animals will have to comply with a series of restrictions such as obtaining liability insurance and develop a plan for the safe recapture of any animal that may escape. Violators of the law could face a civil penalty. The bill does not apply to accredited zoos, animal control, accredited wildlife sanctuaries, and circuses.

U.S. House of Representatives passes bill to stop the trade of primates as “pets”
Washington, DC — Born Free USA united with Animal Protection Institute (Born Free USA) applauded today’s Congressional passage of the Captive Primate Safety Act (H.R. 2964). The bill, championed by Born Free USA and The Humane Society of the United States (The HSUS), prohibits interstate and international movement of nonhuman primates if they are to be kept as “pets.” The Act is sponsored by Representatives Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) and Mark Kirk (R-IL).

Monkeys are not surrogate children
The July 1, 2008, episode of ABC News Primetime focuses on people who have purchased monkeys as surrogate children. Born Free USA united with API has more than 500 primates at its sanctuary, many formerly kept as pets, and our staff worked closely with Primetime producers to develop this story, including allowing them the use of footage from our investigation into exotic animals kept as “pets.”
